Transfers and Name Server Redirection

What You Need To Know About Domain Name Transfers and EONI Hosting of non-EONI-hosted Domains

If you want to host your Web site with EONI -- click here for information on EONI Hosting -- AND you have a domain name that is registered by a party other than EONI, you essentially have two choices:

  1. Transfer your domain name to EONI jurisdiction, or ...
  2. Request your existing domain registrar to configure your domain name to work with your EONI hosting plan

What You Need to Know About Domain Transfers

If you want to transfer to EONI a domain that you have previously registered elsewhere, you have special responsibilities and actions that will be required by your existing domain registrar before they will allow us to assume control of your domain. EONI does not have control over this part of the process, and cannot guarantee that such transfer can be accomplished in a predetermined span of time.

Reasons that a domain transfer may be rejected
  1. The listed email address for the Admin contact is no longer valid.
  2. The domain name has been registered or transferred in the last 60 days: ICANN* policy prevents transfers from being conducted in this timeframe.
  3. The domain is locked or expired.
  4. There is an ongoing dispute related to the name and therefore it has been locked.

In order for Eastern Oregon Net to transfer your domain, the following has to be addressed:

Reconfiguring DNS and Redirecting Your Domain Name

You will need to contact your registrar, the party who maintains administrative technical control over your domain name, if you want them to retain their role, but you wish for browser requests for URLs using that domain name to be automatically directed to the EONI server that hosts your new Web site.

If you do not know whom to contact, you need to run a "whois" search query for your domain name. For example, you could use InterNIC's whois query form -- whois query access is available from thousands of sites on the Internet; this is just one example -- to search for your domain name. The response to your query will identify at least the name of the registrar for your domain name. If a "REGISTRAR LOCK" has not been placed on the domain name (to shield the privacy of the domain holder), you may also be able to directly identify specific contact information for requesting technical assistance.

The registrar for your domain will have assigned addresses for Domain Name Service (DNS) servers that identify primary and secondary address routing for your domain. What you will need to request of your domain's registrar is that they modify these addresses to reflect those of the EONI DNS servers. < click here to see DNS address info >

While this process should be relatively easy and quick to accomplish, keep in mind that EONI has no control over the other registrar's process and that you will still be subject to your registrar's pricing, terms and conditions and other aspects of your domain registration agreement.
