Support: Questions and Answers Detail

Q: Why can't I send and receive email?
A: If you are using software on your computer such as such as: Thunderbird, Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail, Outlook Express, and Outlook the following instructions apply.

POP3 (Post Office Protocol Version 3)

is used to retrieve email from EONI and store it on your computer.
If you can receive email then your POP3 setting is probably set properly. If you have problems receiving email, likely causes are:

1. Your POP3 server is not set correctly, for eoni.com email accounts your POP3 server should be set to mail.eoni.com. Usually an error message such as "host not found" is given if this is the cause of problems.

2. Your POP3 username or password is not correct, try turning the CAPS lock off on your keyboard and enter your username and password again. Usernames are always all lower case and is the entire email address, such as myemail@eoni.com. Passwords are case-sensitive. Case-sensitive means that the email system considers upper and lower case letters to be different. Usually a "invalid username or password" is given if a problem with the username and/or password is the problem.

3. Your computer has anti-virus software that is set to scan all incoming email as it arrives. Try turning off the scanning of incoming email. Be sure and leave the real-time file protection of your anti-virus software active.

4. Your email box has a large number of messages or perhaps just one message that is very large. For best results, find your EONI username and password, and go to mail.eoni.com in your web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc).

SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) is used for sending email.

Your email software has an email account setting usually referred to as the "outgoing email server" or SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) server.

1. Users of EONI should use the SMTP server:

mail.eoni.com and the port 587.

2. Users of other networks should use the SMTP server provided by that network.

3. EONI customers who travel or receive the error message "relaying denied" should be sure and check the option "my server requires authentication" or the "use SMTP authentication" in the area where you specific your SMTP server. This is usually in your software where you setup email accounts. This is usually near the POP3 server setting.

4. Customers who are on the EONI network who need to use SMTP server other than mail.eoni.com should see if the other SMTP server can be accessed on a port other than TCP port 25. EONI blocks access to port 25 on other networks due to problems with spam and virus sending that occurs when port 25 is open from EONI to anywhere on Earth.
