1. Using a phone line splitter?
Try removing the splitter and plugging the phone line directly into the phone
jack without the splitter.
2. Do you have the phone line running through a surge protector?
Try running the phone line directly into the phone jack without going through
the surge protector.If this fixes the problem, it would be a good idea to purchase
another surge protector as it is important to protect your computer?s modem from
electrical surges.
3. Update modem driver, update modem firmware or modem damaged.
Your dialup modem is a very important part of your dialup Internet connection. Check with the manufacturer of your modem to see if you have the correct driver (software for your computer to communicate with your modem) and best firmware (software that actually is install on the modem itself). Often times there are updates available from the manufacturer web site that become available after your modem was built.
Also if your modem is more than 3 years old you should consider replacing the modem. You can purchase a new modem for under $50 and this can go a long way at resolving many problems. We have found over time that many dialup modems degrade in their ability to connect and stay connected.
4. Do you have a fax, answering machine or other phone on the same line?
Try disconnecting the fax, answering machine or other phones seeing if you can connect and
stay connected. If this fixes the problem it would be a good idea to connect the
fax or answering machine to a different phone jack and not use a splitter. We have found that customers with good connect speeds report reduced connect speeds after they add a new device to the phone line used for the dialup Internet connection
5. Is the disconnection coming every 20 minutes?
a. Our server is setup so that it will disconnect
a user automatically in 20 minutes if it does not detect activity on the connection.
While you are browsing the Internet, it is a good idea to click on Refresh or
Reload occasionally.
b. If you use Outlook Express and are experiencing
this, start Outlook Express. Now slick on Tools then click on options. Reduce
the time that you are checking for new e-mails to 10 minutes. Now click on the
Connection tab. Remove the checkmark in Disconnect after sending and receiving.
Click on OK.
c. If you are using Eudora Light: start Eudora.
Now click on Tools then on options. Click on checking mail. Enter 10 in the box
next to check for mail every XX minutes. Click OK.
6. Call waiting on the line?
Enter *70, before the phone number to disable call waiting during the connection.
Call waiting will be enabled on your phone line when you disconnect from the Internet.
7. Is the phone line in good working order? I.e.: noise on the line
etc.
Plug a phone into the phone jack that the computer is using. Now pick up the receiver
and dial a 1. Listen to how the line sounds. Is there static or other sounds on
the line? If so, call your phone company and have them check the phone line.
8. Do you leave the computer running for long periods of time?
Shut your computer down, (power off) for 1 or 2 minutes. Now restart and try to
connect again.
9. Check DUN properties.
Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. Now double click on Dial
Up Networking. Right click on the icon for EONI. Click on properties. Make sure
you are dialing the correct local phone number for your area. Click on Server
types. There should only be 2 check marks on this page. One in Enable software
compression. The other in TCP/IP. Now click on the TCP/IP settings button. Make
sure that the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers are the same as what is in the
literature you were given when you signed up.
10. Check Network configuration.
Click on the Start button. Now go
to Settings. Click on Control Panel. Double click on Network. There should be
3 items listed in the box that comes up. Client for Microsoft networks. Dialup
Adapter. TCP/IP. Double click on TCP/IP. If a message box pops up with an OK button,
click OK. There should be a dot in Obtain an IP address automatically. Click on
the WINS configuration tab. Put a dot in disable WINS resolution. Click on the
DNS configuration tab. Put a dot in disable DNS. Now click OK. Click OK once more.
The computer will need to restart before the setting will take effect.
11. Session timeout.
EONI dialup connections are limited to 10 hours per call. If you need to use your dialup connection for more than 10 hours at a time we suggest you disconnect your dialup connection prior to the 10 hour limit and the reconnect.
12. Alternate EONI dialup numbers.
In many locations EONI has more than one number that can be dialed to access EONI. Some EONI number provide better connections than others depending on the customer modem, phone line and other conditions. Please contact EONI support for alternate numbers that may work for you.
