Q: How do I choose good filenames?
A: Choose filenames using numbers and letters only. Beginners are encouraged to choose filenames that are less than 8 characters.

The filenames of all files are are case-sensitive. This means that UPPER and lower case letters are NoT tHe sAmE. The filenames for these images are all different:

doghouse.JPG

doghouse.jpg

Doghouse.JPG

doghouse.Jpg

Doghouse.jpg

DOGHOUSE.jpg

Many computer operating systems allow you to use long filenames when you create files. However, many FTP programs will truncate the filenames and not preserve the complete filename on the EONI server. FTP clients may take your filename: roverthedog.jpg and convert the filename to rover~1.jpg when the file is actually copied from your computer to the EONI server. Another common problem is that when you create a file your operating system does not tell you the case of the extension. Unless you look closely at the filename using the properties/attributes view of your file you cannot determine if your filename is saved as:

.JPEG or .JPG or .jpg

.gif or .GIF

.html or .htm

.MID or .midi

If you create hyperlinks to filenames that are not the correct case you will have images the do not work, or links to other pages that fail with 404 Not Found.
