In 2006 Microsoft discontinued providing technical support and security patches or upgrades to all versions of Windows 98 and Windows ME, and for Windows XP Service Pack I. Microsoft planned to stop providing patches and updates to Windows 2000 soon thereafter and has also stopped providing updates to versions of Windows XP older than Service Pack 2. (see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/end-support).
Apple operating systems older than OS 10.2 have some vulnerabilities, too, and are not supported by EONI's broadband systems.
Browser software is also subject to security vulnerabilities and exploits. Thus, you need to make sure that you are running the latest versions of your browser to reflect security fixes and upgrades. Note that, for example, Microsoft currently supports only Internet Explorer 6 and 7 (version 5.5 and earlier support was discontinued in 2005), and usually releases security updates at least monthly for these browsers.
There are many security concerns with regards to persons running older operating systems. For the security of our broadband network and thus the security of all users on those EONI networks, EONI is ending support for older operating systems.
